Saint Francis of Assisi Catholic Church

The Family Foundations of Faith Project (for parents of adolescent children)
W. Justin Dyer is a professor at BYU, and he is conducting a long-term study (10 years) of how family impacts faith and religious development during adolescence into young adulthood. Toward this end, he is forming a questionnaire in English and Spanish with both a general set of questions applying to various religious groups. These groups include Protestants, Catholics, Jews, and Mormons. There will be no proselytizing. There may be home visits to families should e-mail and telephone calls fail. The attachment contains more details.

I met Dr. Dyer Monday, June 19, to talk about his study. He is consulting with Notre Dame professor Dr. Christian Smith who was a principal investigator with the 2015 U.S. National Study on Youth and Religion. Dr. Dyer’s study would be more detailed than the 2015 study, looking more closely at just how parental modeling of faith, family climate, and family structure influence religiosity of adolescence and young adulthood. I found Dr. Dyer to be earnest and forthcoming. He simply wants to know more about how religion is passed down and he does not have ulterior motives.

Should you have families in your school that would be interested in this study, please contact Dr. Dyer at: 1-801-422-5287 or at wjd@byu.edu.

Thanks,

Fr. Dave Bittmenn
