In our PreK class here at St. Vincent, a big focus is your child’s Social Emotional Development. We talk a lot about how we are feeling, and what to do about it, especially if it is a strong feeling. We also talk about how to make friends, play together, and solve problems.
We follow our Second Step Program (along with the rest of the school), and each week we talk about a new skill that will help your child begin to be able to self regulate their emotions, form friendships, solve problems, and become more independent.
In class, we will be learning the letters in the alphabet and their sounds in preparation for Kindergarten the following year. We will be working on fine motor skills to help your child hold a pencil to be able to write their name.
As teachers, our goal is to help each child on their individual development level, depending on the skills they have coming into our class. We are a very play-based, hands-on learning environment, where each day your child will be engaged in different activities in each learning center around the classroom. We also spend time outside on the playground, on walks around the school, the school library, and the gym.
